Postpartum Mood Disorders

Approximately 85% of women experience some form of mood disturbance during the postpartum period. For the majority, these symptoms are mild and short-term; however, around 10-15% may develop more serious symptoms of depression or anxiety. Postpartum mental health conditions are generally categorized into three types: (1) postpartum blues, (2) postpartum depression, and (3) postpartum psychosis. It’s helpful to view these conditions as existing on a spectrum, with postpartum blues being the mildest and postpartum psychosis representing the most severe form of postpartum psychiatric illness.
